What's the hype with IoT?
IoT (Internet of Things) for the home is becoming a reality. Look at how technology is becoming so infused into our everyday lives. Look at cars for example who are fast to deliver new technology to the consumers to keep the edge with their competitors, you can remotely control your vehicle in the palm of your hands. See video below from Mercedes Benz.
Now think about the movie Fast and Furious 8 ( the scene where the bad guys are trying to steal the Russian's football case ). Still want that E-Class with the bells and whistles?
Now with IoT, inter-networking of physical devices such as appliances, lighting, heating and cooling system and etc. onto a internet connected network is a reality. "Owners" are given remote or automated control of their house via their smart phones or smart wearable devices.
This sounds all cool and futuristic, but my main worry is security. Without good network security in place, you could compromise your home to malicious hackers or Big Brother? You've heard stories or seen movies about the NSA listening in on their own citizens through their mobile phones (Snowden). They can just switch on your microphone or camera at any time and listen in. Even track you.
I recommend watching I.T with Pierce Brosnan ( http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2679552/). A good example of some scary stuff that can go wrong.
Don't get me wrong, I would love having my house connected and automated. But to what extent? I would partially automate my house, all non life threatening appliances that won't kill me.
If the IoT device had a camera or microphone built-in, it would be covered with masking tape. I'm not taking any chances of getting into any compromising situations that could be used against me.
Just makes you think though, maybe I should just get off my lazy ass and switch off that light myself.
